Schema. what it is, why it matters, and why now.

If you’re new to Schema, here’s a quick introduction.

You might have heard the word ‘Schema’ being mentioned more recently. It sounds technical, but the concept is straightforward, and the impact on your website’s visibility in AI search is significant.

What is Schema?

Schema (or to give it its full name ‘Schema Markup’) is standardised code that can be added to a website to help search engines interpret website content. It’s been around since 2011, and for us it’s been part of how we’ve built and optimised websites at Wisetiger since it was first introduced. With the rise of AI-powered search, Schema’s role is changing. That’s because Schema accelerates indexing for AI answer engines.

The language of Schema was created as a collaboration between Google, Microsoft, Yahoo and Yandex which means that search engines and websites are talking in the same way. Your visitors never see Schema, but the technology adds a layer of structure that helps search engines understand and index your website content.

How does schema help?

Schema adds structure and clarity right across your website, and can be tailored to your needs. Examples of how it supports search include:

  • Who you are – your business name, location, contact details and what you do
  • What you offer – the services you provide and the problems you solve
  • Your people – team members, their roles and the content they've written, helping search engines recognise expertise and authority
  • FAQs – the questions people are already asking, marked up so search engines and AI can read and reference them directly
  • Reviews – testimonials and star ratings associated with your business or services
  • Articles and blog posts – content pieces with authorship, publish dates and topics clearly defined
  • Where you operate – location-specific information for businesses serving a particular region
  • Events – dates, venues and descriptions for workshops, webinars or in-person events
  • Site structure – the navigational layout of your website, helping search engines understand how your pages connect

Why Schema matters right now.

Schema matters because AI answer engines are using it to help index websites through the process of Generative Engine Optimisation (GEO). GEO relies on structured, clearly labelled content to build its answers – and that’s precisely what Schema delivers. It tells AI not just what your content says, but what it’s for and what it means.

In short, Schema has gone from being a smart SEO habit to being an integrated part of how your website communicates in an AI-first world.

How Wisetiger can help.

Schema is important, but it’s just one part of a bigger picture. At Wisetiger, we look at your digital marketing as a whole, making sure your website, your content and your CRM are all working together to deliver successful results.

If your site runs on TYPO3 or WordPress, Schema can be integrated directly into your CMS, meaning your content team can assign and update Schema markup alongside their regular website updates. We handle the initial planning and set-up, but our involvement doesn’t stop there. Ongoing reporting and support with AI indexing is where we make the difference.
